the state of the industry
the state of the industry
Welcome to the 2024 Bound anthology. This year the team continues its mission to provide comprehensive and insightful analysis into the Australian publishing industry.
Publishing continues to be subject to the whims of social, political, and economic factors. As we march through the anthology, undertaking everything from audiobooks to open access journals, several themes emerge. Technology, sustainability, and diversity and inclusion were at the forefront of our author’s minds, and the following commentary presents a holistic picture of the current state of the industry, and what a potential future could look like.
We would like to take the time to personally acknowledge and thank all of our authors, contributors, and people who have made this project possible. Thank you to Anna Spargo-Ryan, Alison Proietto, and the entire Writing and Publishing cohort for all of your effort, energy, insight, and zeal! Special thanks to Zoe Dzunko for your guidance, support, encouragement, and ideas; Bound is as much your project as ours, and it wouldn't be half as good without you.
The team have worked tirelessly and we are delighted to see this edition of Bound come to life. Our enjoyment of it is not proportionate to the amount of time we spent agonising over fonts, oxford commas, and hyperlinks-it’s our baby and we love it. Hopefully, you too enjoy it immensely.
Love,
Erin, David, Vitti and Gideon
Bound is a snapshot of current literary and publishing practices in Australia. With a combination of analysis from emerging publishing professionals and industry experts, the publication provides insight into the future of our trade.
Founded in 2016, Bowen Street Press produces books, magazines and digital content through a range of different partnerships with industry, not-for-profits, and institutional collaborators.
From day one our students collaborate to create tangible, industry-standard publications, dedicating more than 120 hours each semester to gaining practical publishing experience—from writing to proofreading, production and beyond—refining the tools of the trade while working alongside locally and internationally recognised industry partners to produce meaningful works with high impact.
