The Nowhere Child
Some books grip you from the moment you open them; Christian White’s novel The Nowhere Child is one of those. A suspenseful tale of trauma and memory, The Nowhere Child follows Kim, a Melbourne photography teacher, as she attempts to uncover what happened to Sammy Went – who went missing in Kentucky 28 years before – and why a stranger would travel all the way from America to find her.
The Nowhere Child draws inspiration from the writing of Gillian Flynn and Stephen King’s world-building, leading the reader through a maze of twists and turns. Jumping from the past to the present, exploring cults, conspiracy and trauma, The Nowhere Child reveals tantalising kernels of the truth along the way but keeps the reader guessing until the very end.
Christian White won the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for this debut novel; critics are calling White a “born story teller” and praising him for his mastery of narrative structure.
The Nowhere Child is available at all good bookstores.

Mystery Road on ABC TV
Two farm hands – a local Indigenous football player and a backpacker – go missing at a cattle station in the West Australian outback. Their car is found in the middle of a field, with the doors open and the lights still on. No one has seen or heard from them in days.
Enter Detective Jay Swan, played by iconic Indigenous actor Aaron Pederson, who is called in to the town of Patterson to solve the case. He joins local police officer Emma James (Judy Davis): the two unlikely partners need to work together to solve the crime (their shared scenes are some of the most captivating in the show).
What makes Mystery Road so compelling is not the crime itself, but the relationships between the large cast of characters. In a small town with a predominantly Indigenous community, race relations are constantly at breaking point. As an Indigenous man and a police officer, Detective Swan must continually reconcile two aspects of his identity. It’s an intelligent, cinematic and gripping tale of life in the outback.
Mystery Road is available to watch in ABC iView.

Blacklight by Deep Sea Arcade
As the saying goes, “All good things take time”. In the case of Sydney psychedelic-rock band Deep Sea Arcade, album number two has been four years in the making. The result is a sound reminiscent of The Smiths, The Stone Roses and The Beatles, with ethereal guitars and quirky lyrics that strike the perfect balance between futuristic pop and vintage rock.
Their 2014 debut album Outlands saw them break into both the local and international market in a big way. Touring with Noel Gallagher, Kaiser Chiefs and Modest Mouse, Deep Sea Arcade has well and truly graduated from their indie status to one of the biggest bands on the Australian music scene.
The first two singles off this highly anticipated second album, “Learning to Fly” and “Outlaw”, have already been in heavy rotation on Triple J since their drop in August.
Blacklight is available from October 26.

Transcribing audio interviews has long been a tedious and unavoidable task for students, journalists and writers alike. Using a smartphone has made recording interviews more user friendly, but someone still has to transcribe it by hand.
Just Press Record is the first application that offers both recording and transcribing with a streamlined interface. The iOS and Mac OS application mirrors the interface of the Voice Memos app on the current iOS operating system – though with a few notable extra features.
