Studio space - Suzy Faiz
“I am currently undertaking an artist residency in Arnhem, the Netherlands with SLAK Ateliers for two months.
“The residency creates a period where I can concentrate on my work full-time in a large studio. Physically this allows me to create large -scale works. Psychologically it allows for deep thinking without distractions, encouraging a greater concentration within the work. The Netherlands also has a fascinating history of art and design and this has allowed for new influences on my work.
“The Netherlands has a very supportive structure for artists. Studio spaces are often subsidised for local artists, making them very affordable in comparison to the prices in Sydney. There have been many times in Sydney, due to financial strains, I have not been able to afford a studio and this makes it difficult to maintain a continuous practice.”
