TalkTalk, Issue 1
“TalkTalk,” I pitched, “a magazine of inspiration for twentysomething wannabesomethings.”
“I think we can be the judges of what we find inspiring,” said one of TalkTalk’s contributing editors, a twentysomething. “And I don’t know about wannabe,” chimed in another.
OK, I get it: my first lesson in how the audience for this new magazine thinks. They know what they want; they don’t need someone to tell them what’s inspiring, and what’s not. We all talk about the things we want to do; the people you’ll meet in the pages of this magazine are getting on and doing them.
There’s Marina DeBris, the artist and activist who scours Sydney’s beaches for rubbish – she makes thought-provoking artworks with it; Julie Sulejmani, who has turned a passion for drawing her daily latte into a freelance illustrating career; Luke Terbutt, newish owner of Alice’s Bookshop, the long-standing Carlton North second-hand dealer; Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen of Two Birds Brewing, Australia’s first female-owned brewery; and Tess McCabe, graphic designer, networker and small publisher extraordinaire.
They (and others here) share the lessons and learnings — and maybe even some of the secrets — from doing something themselves. So TalkTalk — a magazine about people who are walking the walk. Now that is inspiring.
